Cooper & Gorfer: The Weather Diaries

Saturday 1 November 2014 at 10:00 The National Museum of Photography

New exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist duo Cooper & Gorfer shows painterly photographs from the North Atlantic fashion scene, where the weather is a driving force of creativity.

Over the past two years, Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer have travelled in the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland to explore the impact of local traditions and surroundings on the individual creativities of native fashion designers such as Bibi Chemnitz, Barbara i Gongini and Steinunn. The everchanging weather is a unique source of inspiration to designers in these remote regions, where isolation and scarce ressources kindle roughness and fearlessness – and a desire to create. In one place, pearls are the customary means of expression, in another, wool. One landscape is molded by the drama of ice, another dissappears in the mist.

Writing with camera and colours
In contrast to traditional anthropologists, who used the camera to document people and cultures scientifically, the artists transform what they observe into poetic narratives. Impressions from their travels are worked through in staged photographs which afterwards are manipulated and augmented with layers of colours, structures and symbolism. Instead of depicting reality objectively, Cooper & Gorfer creates collage-like images from which a number of stories leap out.
