The two women – one a writer, the other an artist – have created works with each other for a decade now. Not as a collective, where the joint works blur their exact origins, obscuring who created what, but as two distinct artists whose works interact with each other. The exhibition Circle Breaker is the first major presentation of the two women’s artistic partnership and its results: nine photographic series, three sculptures, an audio installation, a number of texts written for works of art, a sound work, a collection of poems, a photo book and a novel.

Sophia Kalkau and Ursula Andkjær Olsen share an interest in engaging with (not necessarily breaking with) the various categories and conventions that govern what we can think, see and say. They twist and turn established ideas and forms around in order to wrestle them out of their grooves. Both take a sceptical view of a too-ferocious breaking out, of shattering the circle completely. Rather, they are interested in finding new ways to break a circle, for example by pushing it back a little, making it egg-shaped, or expanding it.
