This Sunday afternoon offers a unique opportunity to experience two leading new music ensembles in a concert of purely Polish music when the award-winning vocal group Theatre of Voices (DK) is joined by legendary Smith Quartet (UK).

2018 is the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence as a republic and this will also be celebrated widely in music. In November, the worldwide project 100 for 100. Musical Decades of Freedom will present more than one hundred works by Polish composers from the last 100 years, presented by ensembles like London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern and the International Contemporary Ensemble.

Theatre of Voices and artistic director Paul Hillier have collaborated with PWM Edition and curator Filip Berkowich on the program for the Copenhagen concert which will feature three significant female composers, including the young and already very successful performer Agata Zubel. Modern string quartet classics include Lutosławski’s Folk Songs (arr.) and Górecki’s First String Quartet.

For decades, The Smith Quartet has been at the leading edge of the new music world, having premiered more than 200 works by the world’s most celebrated composers. The Grammy-awarded Theatre of Voices was founded in 1990 by Paul Hillier and is based here in Copenhagen. Also featured are the flutist Isabella Hübener and the pianist Tanja Zapolski.
