Composition: Fredensborg September 1884.
In December 1884 the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian-Danish author and scholar, Ludvig Holberg was celebrated in Norway and Denmark with music by Edvard Grieg, Johan Svendsen, J.P.E. Hartmann, Emil Hartmann, August Winding, Frederik Rung, Axel Grandjean and Otto Malling. In a letter to the music teacher at Sorø Academy, Carl Emil Jæhnigen, Gade described "Holgergiana" as "en mindre Symphony i 4 Afdelinger " (a little symphony in four sections).
