Composition: 14 October to 24 November 1842.
Gade had composed his Op. 6 in the autumn of 1842, before his first symphony had created a sensation in Leipzig, at which time both Fr. Kistner and Breitkopf & Härtel wanted to publish it. Already during the first months of his stay in Leipzig, it was performed by celebrities such as Ferdinand David, Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn.
