The song is included in Ludvig Budde's story "Jul" (Christmas) which was published in "Juleroser" (Christmas Roses) 1888. Here it is introduced as follows: "When they had had their tea, miss Sofie turned blushing to Frederik asking him with a peculiar soft voice, as if there were a secret trembling behind it: 'Would you please begin the little good-night song, which the children usually sing? You would bring joy to us.' The blushing reflected in the face of the young student, and his voice trembled a bit; but fine and melodiously he began, miss Sofie joined him, Karen and Margrethe followed, and they sang:"
