Arrangement of:

Composition: 1929.

Nielsen mentioned the cantata for the first time in a letter of May 1929. During July he received the text from the poet, and the music was composed in the course of a few weeks at the end of the month. According to Nielsen's diary, the cantata was finished on 5 August. Johannes Andersen undertook the instrumentation of the work and of Fest-Præludium ved Aarhundredskiftet (CNW 84), which was also played at the occasion. The cantata was performed by the Band of the Royal Life Guards.

This version was used for the first performance at the jubilee celebration in 1929.

Version for reciter, male choir, strings and piano

CNUCarl Nielsen Udgaven (The Carl Nielsen Edition. Royal Danish Library: Copenhagen 1998–2009) IV/I, Add. 37

Date: c. 1930.

Already when Carl Nielsen was first approached, there were plans that the new cantata should be performed at the Polytechnic College's future annual celebrations, and he therefore provided a version for choir, reciter, strings and piano. The precise date of the revised version is not known, but it was probably done in autumn 1930.
