The collection was published in 1892. Some of the individual songs probably date back to the late 1880s while others most likely stem from the beginning of the '90s. Musik til fem Digte af J.P. Jacobsen was to have consisted of six songs, but shortly before the printing Nielsen withdrew the first of them, I Drømmenes Land (CNW 285).
